Some FAQ's about General Day Case surgery

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions by patients either needing a surgery or looking for a specialist:
Q – What surgeries can be done as a day case surgery?A – Surprisingly for many people, thanks to advances in medical techniques such as Keyhole (laparoscopic) operations and new materials, many common operations such a hernia repair, gallbladder removal, varicose veins, haemorriods and some obesity operations can be done as a day case operation. Patients are able to leave in the evening in many instances.

Q - How quickly can I get back to my normal life after a day case surgery?
A – It really depends on the procedure. For example, with the new VNUS Closure technique for varicose veins, patients are walking out of the clinic within an hour and return to normal life there and then.

A hernia operation using the keyhole method and a new material called surgical mesh to repair the hernia, rather than the old fashioned “tension” method using tissue and muscle. Patients normally return to their day to day lives within a matter of days.
Q – Do I have to be referred to a Specialist General Surgeon?A – Not at all. You are perfectly at liberty to call a specialist consultant direct if you are worried about any part of your health.

If you visit your GP first, then you are also perfectly at liberty to request who you are referred to.
Q – What about exploratory procedures?A – A general surgeon is also able to carry out endoscopic procedures (where a camera is put into the body ), which are done in order to diagnose or monitor certain conditions. Patients are also able to leave the hospital or clinic the very same day with the procedure itself being very quick.

Q – Where do the operations take place?
A – Every consultant surgeon will have at least one hospital where they have admitting rights to operate, some procedures do not require hospital admission and can be done in a clinic theatre. Your consultant will go through this with you before your operation to ensure you are happy with the location.

Q – Will my medical insurance be accepted?
A – Many consultants accept a wide variety of medical insurances, so you would need to ask at the clinic or check your policy conditions if you are not sure.

Q – What happens if I don’t have medical insurance?
A - If you are not covered by medical insurance, you will be provided with a quote for the treatment beforehand. In some cases, it is also possible to provide you with several competitive quotes.
